If you're visiting Aveiro and have an interest in art, history, or craftsmanship, the Vista Alegre Museum in Ílhavo is a short drive away.
This museum is part of the historic Vista Alegre porcelain factory, which has been producing fine ceramics since 1824. It’s one of Portugal’s most iconic brands and continues to export to over 90 countries today.
A food-fired kiln that is no longer operational. You can enter the kiln. Click on the image below to see what it looks like from inside.
The museum itself is located in the original factory site, where you'll walk through the story of how a small local company became a global name in porcelain.

The self-guided tour takes you through 14 themed rooms, starting with the original wood-fired kilns…
and moving through glass production,
the works influenced by Art Noveau, Art Deco and Modernism,
the stoneware collection,
tableware art dedicated to the poetry of Luís de Camões,
miniature sculptures,
a vintage fire truck and more.
The area surrounding the museum is a small park by itself including parking lot, benches and paths, and a chapel that’s part of the historic factory complex.
What’s unique here is that the museum doesn’t mark the end of Vista Alegre’s production—it’s still very much in business. In fact, after changing hands in 2009, the company has expanded and modernized significantly. Today, Vista Alegre is not only a respected heritage brand but also a leading player in the global tableware market.
The museum is open daily, with shorter hours in the winter months, and closed on major holidays like January 1st and Christmas Day. The on-site shop carries a massive selection of porcelain if you’re looking for a souvenir or gift.
